James Cook (1728-1779)

James Cook was born on October 27, 1778, the son of a poor Scotsman in Yorkshire, Marton. Cook started out in the navy as a lowly mate, and after four years, he was ranked as a master. He applied himself to study algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and astronomy. Those skills will be needed to command a ship.

Cook commanded the Endeavor because of his navigation and mathematics abilities. As they sailed north along the coast of Australia, their ship was seriously damaged by a coral reef. After repairs, they sailed back to England. He also commanded the Resolution because England wasn’t sure if there was a large southern continent. He sailed for three years and proved that there was no large southern continent in the Pacific. The second voyage of the Resolution, Cook sailed in search of Antarctica. On the trip, the Resolution was damaged, so he sailed to Hawaii to repair his ship. A few native cannibalistic Polynesians ate James Cook after a small battle. Later then, the Resolution returned to England.
